Moringa-02The Miracle Tree – A Plant Of Many Talents

Moringa is a tree that can be found in many tropical climates including Mozambique. The tree has been called a ‘miracle tree’ due to it’s many beneficial properties.

First, the leaves are jammed packed with multi-vitamins. The leaves can be eaten raw, cooked, or dried and pounded into a powder for storage. The powder can be added to porridges and other dishes to boost vitamins. The leaves have been shown to greatly help mal-nourished children and adults. Also, the leaves have proven to increase breast milk for mothers.

Also, the seeds are beneficial. The seeds grow in huge pods that can be eaten like fresh beans. Secondly, if the seeds are allowed to dry, the internal kernel can be ground into a powder and used to purify water!! Currently, research is being done to develop household purification systems using Moringa. With latrines only a few meters away from sources of drinking water, dirty water is a huge problem in our area.

At MGK, we are working to be a major distributor of the leaf powder, educate people about the trees qualities and distribute seedlings to families.
